The Anatomical Lung
The anatomical lung model was designed to demonstrate the surgical anatomy of the lung. It can be mounted into either the VATS Trainer v3 or Open Thoracic trainer.
Anatomical Features
- Parenchyma. The soft, foamy parenchyma can be cut or dissected using harmonic shears or scissors.
- Visceral Pleura. A thin, soft silicone layer covers the parenchyma to simulate the visceral pleura.
- Structures. Embedded anatomical structures such as vessels, bronchi and lymph nodes are anatomically accurate to the segmental level and for easy identification.
Exercises
Lobectomies
Anatomical Model was initially designed to simulate VATS Lobectomies: right upper, middle and right lower, using either fissure-first or fissure-last.
Standard. Both upper and lower lobectomies can be performed on the same lung sequentially in any order. The middle lobe acts as a natural barrier during the procedure.
Sleeve. Right upper lobe lobectomy with bronchial sleeve requires a specialized variant of the anatomical lung model. This variant features a hollow bronchus with cartilage rings to replicate the anatomy.
Segmental resections
To maximize the use of the model and its teaching potential, anatomical segmental resections may be performed in the following sequence:
RS3 → RS2 → RS6 → RS9+10
While this sequence is suggested for optimal practice, any other segmentectomy can also be performed.
Other tasks
In addition to anatomical pulmonary resections, other tasks that can also be practiced on the model include:
- Proximal control of the main pulmonary artery
- Lymphadenectomy
- Pulmonary decortication
- Wedge resection
