Workstation Setup
VATS Simulator
The simulator should be positioned on a table near its edge, with the anterior side (the longer side with the nipple) facing the surgeon.
The table should have a standard height suitable for writing and be sufficiently large. A minimum size of 100x80 cm is recommended. Ensure there is ample space on both sides of the simulator to accommodate instruments and devices, as well as behind the simulator for the endoscopy system.
Table Cloth...
Tablecloth will prevent the suction cups from attaching the simulator to the table.
Endoscopy System
Endoscopy systems generally consist of four main parts:
- Main unit. This component processes the image captured by the camera. In portable endoscopy
systems, the main unit usually includes a built-in screen for image display.
Additionally, an external display, such as a large-screen TV, can be connected via an HDMI cable, enabling a larger group of participants to observe the procedure simultaneously.Eye Level...
The center of the screen should ideally be positioned at or slightly below eye level.
- Camera Head. The camera head is connected to the main unit via a cable with a multi-pin connector.
To ensure the camera sensor remains clean, it must always be covered with a protective cover or have an endoscope plugged in. - 30° Endoscope. The endoscope connects to the camera via a bayonet connector. It contains
multiple lenses that are susceptible to damage if the endoscope is dropped.
To maintain optimal performance, both the distal and proximal lenses must be kept clean and occasionally wiped with a suitable cloth. - Light Cable. The light cable delivers light from the light source to the endoscope. One end of the cable must be screwed onto the endoscope, while the other end pluggs into the light source, typically integrated into the main unit.
Kennedy Camera. Kennedy Camera. Laptop now replaces the main unint, and the Kennedy Camera functions as the camera head, 30° endoscope, and light cable, all integrated into a single device.
VATS Instruments
During a typical 2-, 3-, or 4-port VATS procedure, the surgeon stands near the patient's head, corresponding to the right side of the simulator, while the assistant navigating the camera stands near the patient's legs, corresponding to the left side of the simulator.
Therefore, VATS instruments should be positioned to the right of the VATS simulator.
Focus and Organization...
It is recommended to set up only the instruments required for a particular exercise and not all available instruments.
Surgical Devices
Surgical devices occupy a significant amount of space and often have connecting cables. Therefore, it is advisable to keep them stored away and only bring them forward when they are needed for a specific exercise.
Generator...
The generator can often be placed under the main unit of the endoscopy system to save space and at the same time elevate the screen.
